DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 216 pages. Publisher: Thames and Hudson; (1991). "The morning of February 8, 1986 will always have a special place in my memory, and no doubt in that of my Dutch colleague, Jacobus van Dijk. Together on that day we quite literally stumbled into the first painted chamber of the tomb. Dijk's memorable cry on that occasion, on catching sight of the inscription naming the tomb's owner ("My God! It's Maya!") reverberated around the world." For Geoffrey Martin and his colleague, the internationally acclaimed discovery of the tomb of Maya was the culmination of a painstaking ten-year search at Saqqara, the burial ground of Memphis, ancient capital of Egypt.

Maya had been Tutankhamun's Treasurer and one of the most powerful men during the boy-king's short reign. Exploration of his tomb, and those of other important officials in the necropolis, has opened a new chapter in our understanding of Egyptian society more than 3,000 years ago. "The Hidden Tombs of Memphis" is Professor Martin's first-hand account of his discoveries. Since 1975, his Anglo-Dutch team has uncovered a series of spectacular funerary monuments, not just of Maya, but of Horemheb; Tutankhamun's Commander-in-Chief and later himself Pharaoh; Ramesses the Great's sister, Princess Tia, and other courtiers of New Kingdom Egypt.

The beautiful wall reliefs and paintings in these tombs have transformed our knowledge of New Kingdom art, hitherto largely dominated by the well-known treasures of ancient Thebes. Many isolated masterpieces in the world's museums can now be linked to the Saqqara monuments from which they originally came, thanks to the author's detective work. Illustrated throughout with photographs and drawings of all the major reliefs and other finds, from jewelry to mummy cases, "The Hidden Tombs of Memphis" is an exciting account of the richest Egyptian tomb discoveries of recent times.

CONDITION: VERY GOOD. Lightly read hardcover w/dustjacket. Thames and Hudson (1991) 216 pages. Pages are clean, crisp, unmutilated, remain well bound, and are unmarked; HOWEVER if you open the book and lift the front dustjacket flap, you'll see beneath the dustjacket flap that the original owner affixed a tiny return address sticker. It's almost unnoticed as you actually have to lift the dustjacket flap to see behind it, so it is very unobtrusive, but it is there. Also, though not visible to any individual page, there are a few teeny-tiny black specks visible to the top surface of the closed page edges, very tiny, only a few, but nonetheless undeniably present. I'm not sure what they are...they're not "foxing" (age spots), just a few droplets of some splashed or sprayed nearby, just tiny black specks. Again, they're only visible when book is closed, not to individual pages, only to the mass of closed page edges, sometimes referred to as the "page block"). Otherwise the book is unmarked and unblemished. Judging by the wear evidenced and the relative tightness of the binding, we'd guess that the book has been read once; perhaps only flipped through a few times. But our best guess would be that it was read once by someone with a very light "footprint". The dustjacket is very clean, evidencing only mild shelfwear, principally in the form of mild rubbing (dustjacket is gloss black and so shows rub/scuff marks very easily, even merely from being shelved between other books). There are no tears, no chips, it is a very handsome dustjacket. The full cloth covers are entirely without blemish. This is a clean, sturdy, presentable book with no real blemishes, just very minor, purely superficial and cosmetic indications of handling and of having been read. While given the fact it has been clearly read (or at least flipped through a few times) it might not achieve the exalted status of a "shelf trophy", it is nonetheless a very clean copy with "lots of miles left under the hood". Satisfaction unconditionally guaranteed. In stock, ready to ship. No disappointments, no excuses. PROMPT SHIPPING! HEAVILY PADDED, DAMAGE-FREE PACKAGING! #1625i.

PROFESSIONAL REVIEW:

REVIEW: Illustrated throughout with photographs and drawings of all the major reliefs and other finds, from jewelry to mummy-cases, a detailed account of the richest Egyptian tomb discoveries of recent times. "New Aspects of Antiquity", is an internationally acclaimed series of which "The Hidden Tombs of Memphis" is a part. In this series some of the world's leading archaeologists present their own latest discoveries, discoveries which in many cases have revolutionized our knowledge of man's early history. The series reflects the worldwide expansion of archaeology in the last decade of the twentieth century, taking in major sites and civilizations from Europe and the Near East to the Americas and the Pacific.

READER REVIEWS:

REVIEW: A fascinating account of an archaeological survey in Saqqara, G.T. Martin takes the readers on a fascinating expedition in the Saqqara area, in search of the lost tombs of general Horemheb and chancellor Maya, two of the most powerfull men during the reign of Tutankhamun. The author discusses the re-discovery, structure and decoration of the tomb of the two dignitaries, as well as the tombs of the Tias, relatives of Ramesses II.

A welcome view into modern Egyptian fieldwork. Geoffrey Martin gives an overview of 15 years of archeological digs and restorations in the Saqqara (Memphis necropolis) area. His descriptions are accessible and include enough background material on the age without it becoming a distraction. The book gives an excellent view of the work being done by modern archeologists, and often hints at the large amounts of research that go on outside of the field season.

ABOUT US: Prior to our retirement we used to travel to Eastern Europe and Central Asia several times a year seeking antique gemstones and jewelry from the globe’s most prolific gemstone producing and cutting centers. Most of the items we offer came from acquisitions we made in Eastern Europe, India, and from the Levant (Eastern Mediterranean/Near East) during these years from various institutions and dealers. Much of what we generate on Etsy, Amazon and goes to support worthy institutions in Europe and Asia connected with Anthropology and Archaeology. Though we have a collection of ancient coins numbering in the tens of thousands, our primary interests are ancient/antique jewelry and gemstones, a reflection of our academic backgrounds.

Though perhaps difficult to find in the USA, in Eastern Europe and Central Asia antique gemstones are commonly dismounted from old, broken settings – the gold reused – the gemstones recut and reset. Before these gorgeous antique gemstones are recut, we try to acquire the best of them in their original, antique, hand-finished state – most of them originally crafted a century or more ago. We believe that the work created by these long-gone master artisans is worth protecting and preserving rather than destroying this heritage of antique gemstones by recutting the original work out of existence. That by preserving their work, in a sense, we are preserving their lives and the legacy they left for modern times. Far better to appreciate their craft than to destroy it with modern cutting.

Not everyone agrees – fully 95% or more of the antique gemstones which come into these marketplaces are recut, and the heritage of the past lost. But if you agree with us that the past is worth protecting, and that past lives and the produce of those lives still matters today, consider buying an antique, hand cut, natural gemstone rather than one of the mass-produced machine cut (often synthetic or “lab produced”) gemstones which dominate the market today. We can set most any antique gemstone you purchase from us in your choice of styles and metals ranging from rings to pendants to earrings and bracelets; in sterling silver, 14kt solid gold, and 14kt gold fill. When you purchase from us, you can count on quick shipping and careful, secure packaging. We would be happy to provide you with a certificate/guarantee of authenticity for any item you purchase from us. There is a $3 fee for mailing under separate cover. I will always respond to every inquiry whether via email or message, so please feel free to write.
