Uncommon early view of the interior gateway to the inner entrance of the Temple of Hathor at Denderah, Egypt by Théodule Devéria.
Théodule Charles Devéria (1831-1871) was a noted French Egyptologist and photographer whose father was French artist Achilles Devéria who was also an early practitioner of photography. Théodule made the first of four excursions to photograph the monuments and ruins of Egypt beginning in 1858 with his last visit in 1866. A large group of his negatives and prints were sold to the Louvre by his widow at his death. This collection was later transferred to the Musee d’Orsay and now reside in the photographic archives there. A somewhat cropped version of this particular image is held in the Getty Museum photographic archive showing less of the columns at the right and left of the image as well as less of the top and bottom of the image. Devéria’s works do not surface often.
