9-Foot Cedar Totem Pole Beaver Design Chief Walter Harris 1976:
$50000.00

This is a timeless, hand-carved, vintage Red Cedar totem pole by acclaimed and deceased Northwest Coast Native Gitksan artist, Chief Walter Harris. It measures 111" tall by 49" wide by 24" deep. It was created in 1976 and is a prime example of classic Gitxsan design. It is signed on the back and deeply hollowed to prevent checking and cracking. This pole has been entirely adze-finished, which is a very slow and laborious process that results in beautiful texturing. Your purchase will include free crating and freighting. After beginning his working life as a carpenter, Walter Harris attended the Ksan School of Northwest Coast Native Art in 1969. His teachers were Doug Cranmer, Robert Davidson, Bill Holm and Duane Pasco. He eventually became an instructor himself later on. Walter collaborated in the carving of the murals at the Royal Bank in Vancouver and the doors at the UBC Museum of Anthropology. In 1971, he carved totem poles for Kispiox, where he was the Hereditary Chief. He carved for BC Provincial Museum, Victoria and for the Museum of Civilization, Ottawa and has had exhibits at the Vancouver Centennial Museum, the Museum of Anthropology and the 1978 Commonwealth Games in Edmonton, Alberta. In 1979, he created a carved and painted screen for the Canadian Embassy in Paris. Walter participated in 'The Legacy' exhibition from 1980, which travelled across Canada and the UK. In 2005, Walter received the Order of Canada. Although the beaver always has ears and rounded nostrils, the two most identifying symbols are the tail and the two large incisor teeth. Quite often the tail will have cross-hatching depicting the scaly surface of the beaver’s tail. The beaver is known for its industriousness and building skills.
