A very rare antique Japanese pillow box or headrest. This one would be large doll size. It hasa drawer at one end which has a mechanism inside so the drawer does not come all the way out orfalls out. The wood part is kiri wood or paulownia. Hand painted with wisteria flowers and leaves withmatching painting on the crepe silk pillow. We have never seen one of these in miniature or doll size. Many are to be found in regular human size. The reason for the high neck pillow is that it would mainly be used to preserve the fabulous Geisha coiffures. We believe this little pillow is late Edoperiod to early Meiji. (Ca 1860 - 1870). It measures 4” long and 3 1/2” high. It is in beautiful conditionexcept for small stain on silk at one end. The white silk has yellowed from age.
