Buffalo Soldier Diary - Extremely Rare - Handwritten with Illustrations:
$7500.00

One of the most interesting (and humorous) diaries that I have owned. It is also the rarest. Exceptionally scarce. Other well-written, self-illustrated journals from Buffalo Soldiers protecting the Mexican Border simply do not exist. None in the trade. No sale results at ABPC or the Rare Book Hub, and no institutional holdings per OCLC.
Front cover title:Wit and Humor from the Mexican Border,Diary of a Crute Bugler in the Armyby Chiquito Lance Corporal BuglerEdward C. Price.Camp Furlong, New Mexico 1919.Co. B, 24th Infantry
The diary measures approximately 4\" x 5.5.\"140 unnumbered pages which include Price\'s humorous \"dictionary\" of army slang.Original art frontispiece and six-in-text hand-drawn illustrations.Five additional drawings and a YMCA envelope postmarked Columbus, New Mexico with a Camp Furlong return address. The worn, soiled, and faded front cover has been neatly reattached. Rear cover is missing. All pages present, in good condition, and tightly bound.
The journal was kept byLance Corporal Edward C. Price, anAfrican-American \"crute\" bugler assigned tothe 24th Infantry Regiment, one of the famous Buffalo Soldier units of the U.S. Army. This diary takes place at the tail-end of the hostilities along the Mexican border with entries (including at least one mentioning Pancho Villa and his men) from August to November 1919.
