CLASSIC TORTOISE & BRASS SPHINX SCULPTURE, ANTHONY REDMILE, CA. 1970'S:
This exotic Sphinx is tortoise shell of varied hues laid over a carved wood sculpture, then gracefully inlaid with brass, attributed to British artist/designer Anthony Redmile, ca. l970's
The mythical creature has the head of a female human, haunches of a lion and wings of a bird, interpreted in a sleek, stylized version of the Greek Sphinx, a woman, versus the Egyptian, shown as male. Both are considered guardians.
Hundreds of pieces of tortoise veneer are carefully applied over the wooden form, with golden yellow hues forming the hair and headdress. Brass strands define the feathers of the voluptuously rounded wings, reaching into the curled tail. Brass toenails edge all four paws; the figure rests atop of rectangular plinth.
Piercing eyes of black stone, probably obsidian, highlight the beautifully detailed and sculpted face.
The statue is 11 7/8 " tall x 12 3/4 " deep x 5 " wide. Condition very good; no losses of tortoise or brass; no lifting or abrasions. Bottom is lined in red fabric. It is apparently unsigned.
Redmile is known for sculpture, mirrors and furniture using natural materials such as tortoise, seashells and ostrich eggs.
