General Anthony Clement \'\'Nuts\'\' McAuliffe [1898 1975] was aUnited States Armygeneral who commanded the 101st Airborne Division troops defendingthe Belgium town of Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge in World War II.On December 16, 1944, German forces launched their largest offensive of the war on the Western Front with the goal to capture the Belgium port of Antwerp.During their attack German forces needed to pass thru the town of Bastogne which was defended by the 101st Airborne Division. On December 21, General McAuliffe found his command completely surroundedand greatly outnumberedbyGerman ground troops. The following morning on December 22 a German surrender party carrying a white flag approached with a surrender ultimatum which allowed American troops two hours to surrender,orGerman forces would annihilate them with heavy artillery. Upon first reading the letter general McAuliffe believed the Germans wanted to surrender to him but after realizing his mistake he laughed and said \'\'Us surrender, Aw, Nuts!\'\'. After some discussion with his staff the following reply was taken to the German commander. To the German Commander, \'\'Nuts\'\', The American Commander. Listed for sale is a stunning framed display which contains a [TLS] typed letter signed by General Anthony McAuliffe. The letter is a biographical synopsis of the general\'smilitary career and reads as follows, \'\'Anthony Clement McAuliffe. Anthony Clement McAuliffe, United States army officer in the European theatre during World War II, was born in Washington, D.C., July 2, 1898. He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1919 and was commissioned in field artillery. After routine service and school appointments during peacetime, McAuliffe served with airborne troops in World War II. He was acting commander of the 101st air-borne division in December 1944 during the \'\'Battle of the bulge\'\', and in this post his stout defense of Bastogne checked the German drive in the Ardennes and contributed to the ultimate German defeat. His terse reply to a German summons to surrender Bastogne - \'\'Nuts!\'\' - became a classic of World War II. During the postwar period, McAuliffe held various command and staff appointments, ending his military career as commanding general of the 7thy army in Germany in 1953-55 and as United States army commander in Europe 1955-56. He retired from the army as a full general on May 31, 1956, to enter industry. The letter is signed \'\'A.C. McAuliffe\'\' in blue ballpoint pen, measures 8.50 x 7.50 inches and is in fine condition. Authenticity...The letter has been authenticated by JSA James Spence Authentication Services and will be accompanied with the above Letter of Authenticity. The display is centered around a great image of the general with other military officers holding a sign with the Bastogne town name. Mounted next to the photograph is the letter as described above and mounted below is a professionally engraved metal descriptive plaque which reads as follows, \'\'General Anthony \'\'Nuts\'\' McAuliffe July 2, 1898 - August 11, 1975. McAuliffe was a senior United States Army Officer who earned fame as the acting commander of the U.S. 101st airborne division troops defending the town of Bastogne, Belgium during the Battle of the Bulge in World War II. On December 22, 1944,General McAuliffe while completely surrounded by German forces received a communication from the German Commander which read in short \'\'To the U.S.A. Commander of the encircled town of Bastogne, the fortune of war is changing. This time the U.S.A. forces in and around Bastogne have been encircled by strong German armored units. There is only one possibility to save the encircled troops from total annihilation: that is the honorable surrender of the encircled town!\'\' General McAuliffe responded as follows, \'\'To the German Commander, \'\'NUTS\'\', the American Commander\'\'. Mounted on both sides of the plaque are two [reproduction] 101st Screaming Eagles cloth patches. The display has been professionally assembled in all acid free material with great attention to detail as follows. Each item within the display has been triple matted in a grey linen outer matte and accented with a dark grey and a black inner matte. The display has been assembled in a quality ornate silver/black wood frame to the dimensions of 23.00 x 18.00 inches and it is stunning. The signed letter is a desirable example of this legendary World War IIArmy commander, authenticated, beautifully framed and the display will be a wonderful addition to any collection.
