ISHTAR "Queen Of The Night" Babylonian Goddess stone relief:
$36

"QUEEN OF THE NIGHT" 1800 BC Terracotta relief, 23 cm length x 17 cm width (9 x 7 inches), with inset hanging chain & back-label description. Ancient Babylonian depiction of the Goddess ISHTAR. Reproduction based on the famous "Burney Relief," an 1800 BC Babylonian artefact now kept in the British Museum. The relief portrays a nude winged goddess with eagle's talons, flanked by two wide-eyed owls and perched upon supine lions. It is dated to the Old Babylonian Period of Hammurabi. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND Immortalized on seals and tablets for over five millennia, Ishtar (who's name means "star") is the great celestial goddess, "Queen of the Night," who is astronomically associated with the star/planet Venus. Her bird-like feet and feathered wings designate her status as a sky or heavenly Goddess. The attendant owls signify her role as "ruler of the night." In possible reference to an ancient celestial event, the old Sumerian Chronicles metaphorically describe "Ishtar's Journey through the Underworld" recording the terrible time she (Venus) vanished from the heavens during the cataclysmic "War of the Gods." Known to the early Sumerians as Inanna, Ishtar is considered consort of the Sun God Utu-Shamash who's life-giving rays she reflects. Forever visible in the dawn & evening sky, for countless centuries she was venerated as the "Great Mother" and central feminine deity of ancient Mesopotamia. She is aways depicted as "the nude goddess" in memory of her epic journey when she was forced to give up her earthly garments & symbols of status to gain entry through the Gates of the Underworld.
