Commemorative Cross of the Third Army, War of 1915-1918 ( della Terza Armata, Guerra 1915-1918). White enamel and silvered bronze Greek cross surmounted by the Crown of Savoy with loop for ribbon suspension; the face with a square central silvered bronze depicting the Lion of Saint Mark in relief in wartime pose with a sword in its right paw; the reverse inscribed ‘A RICORDO E RICONOSCENZA’ (in Remembrance and Recognition); diameter 33.5mm (1.32 inches); on original ribbon, the face deeply age-faded. The Cross was instituted as early as 1919, one of a number of Army Crosses to commemorate participation in World War I. It was unusual in being issued officially and at the expense of the Duke of Aosta, its commander. The Third Army had a great success on the Isonzo in 1916, taking Gorizia and thus establishing a bridgehead across the river. The Duke also led the orderly retreat across the Tagliamento after the defeat at Caporetto in 1917.
