ROYALTY KING EDWARD 8TH CANADA RAILWAY WINNIPEG 1919 GOLF

Great letter from King Edward 8th as Prince of Wales touring Canada on a Canadian Pacific Railway Train. The letter spans a week of his journey from Montreal through Sault Sainte Marie to Winnipeg Manitoba. The Prince of Wales had one important relationship with Mrs Freda Dudley Ward, wife of a Liberal MP in Great Britain. He had been sent overseas by his father, King George 5th to thank the Empire for their support during World War 1 and arrived in Canada in September 1919. Edward wrote to Mrs Dudley Ward and received letters from her throughout his trip and this letter covers his time in Montreal (over 50% French Canadian)\'but all very kind and enthusiastic\'. After Montreal, Prince Edward played golf at Dixie \'Mrs Thpider (nickname for Freda) would have been quite thrilled to see him win the last five holes from an old man!!\' 4th September CPR train from Montreal to Sault Ste Marie. 6th September Sault Ste Marie \'I walked through a paper mill and big steel works as well as watching the big lock in the canal filled! These Canadians can teach us a lot as regards inventions and constructions sweetheart!\' Camp at Pine Portage, Nippigon River. Two letters from Freda arrived that evening. \'Still her letters are the next best thing when we are parted and the mere sight of her writing makes me live again, bless HER and it!!\' I\'ve heard from old Bertie (king George 6th) by this mail too and he tells me he\'s heard from you.\' \'Why the hell is this world so conventional preventing 2 people who love each other from traveling around together? I\'ve got thoroughly bitten with Canada and its possibilities, its the place for a man particularly just after the gt war and if I wasn\'t P of W well guess I\'d stay here quite a while!! But alas I am P of W !!!\' 8th September en route to Winnipeg, Manitoba \'I\'ve got a little out of practice for public work and speaking as I found at Port Arthur and Fort William this afternoon the 2 twin Lake Superior cities. I launched a small steamer at the former place and was shown over a grain elevator and flour mill at the latter.I never went to Timmins or Cobalt on account of miners\' strikes last week.\' 10th September (on Government House, Winnipeg letterhead)
\'Theydried me up all night yesterday addressing veterans, wounded men at a hospital, Red Cross people and finally a bunch of Canadian Navy League.\'
\'I\'m now .. concocting and dictating a speech for a lunch with the Canadian Club of Winnipeg tomorrow but guess I\'m going to get a round of golf first!!\' \'The Devonshire\'s (Duke and Duchess of Devonshire Governor General of Canada 1918-1922) are here and turned up at the party this evening and she was as pompous as ever.\' I suppose you\'ve been here darling one – a very unfinished city I think and of course they had bad strikes and some shooting here in June tho things have settled down more now – there were no untoward incidents yesterday or petitions as were threatened in the papers!\' \'We are starting for golf at 8.30am...tous les baisers of your very very own devoted adoring little David who loves his precious darling little Fredie +que hier –que demain who never never stops thinking and dreaming of HER! An important love letter posted in Winnipeg September 10th arriving London 26th September.
