Pipe Retort:

Hand made pipe retort
If your purchasing estate pipes or you haven't given your old favorites a good deep cleaning in awhile, this is a must have!I dropped my old retort doing a restoration last week and shattered it. Not finding any for sale necessitated fabricating a new one.I have made extras and thought perhaps others may find themselves in need of a pipe retort.
Fill tube half to 2/3 full of 90% or higher Isopropyl Alcohol (You can use any high ABV alcohol, but I recommend Isopropyl Alcohol)Insert a cotton ball into bowl of pipe to disipate vapors and absorb excess alcoholHeat over low heat source such as a candle or bunson burnerDo not heat over high heat source or boil violently as it will cause the alcohol to boil out of the pipe bowl and damage the pipes finish.Once the alcohol is boiling, remove from heat source and reverse pressure will draw out the alcohol and impurities in the pipe out and back into the retort.I strongly recommend:1) Reaming your pipe thoroughly first, and give it a salt treatment (I use cotton balls)2) using a shank brush or bristle pipe cleaner, clean the shank and stem to loosen build up residue3) Apply the retort4) Repeat process using fresh alcohol until liquid comes out clean5) Using a shank brush or bristle pipe cleaner, and cotton pipe cleaners to clean the shank and stem until it comes out clean.6) Let your pipe rest several days so as to thoroughly dry and the pours in the wood to close again
Congratulations! You now have a sterile and refreshed pipe to enjoy!
This sale does not include pipe used as reference.
