Actual size 13½x10½ with a thin white border (one surface). Image from their 1952 musical comedy Sailor Beware. The film features uncredited cameos from Betty Hutton and a young James Dean, a full three years before he made his big screen debut in East of Eden. In 1946, Jerry Lewis (b. 1926) and Dean Martin (1917-1995) formed a comedy duo that will not soon be forgotten. Martin and Lewis got their start in nightclubs at first, but within a few years the two were starring in movies together. Both men made their film debuts in My Friend Irma (1949) and proceeded to star in a total of 17 movies together. Notable films of this time period include At War with the Army (1950) and Scared Stiff (1953). Dean Martin was relegated to playing the straight man in all of their acts which ultimately led to Jerry Lewis getting all of the credit from critics. Martin got fed up with this perception and the two could not reconcile, leading to the decision to break off the partnership in 1956, ten years to the day that the comedy act was formed. They eventually reconciled, but it was many years before they spoke with each at length again. After the partnership ended, Jerry Lewis (b. 1926) went on to continue his film career, starring in The Bellboy (1958), The Nutty Professor (1963), and The King of Comedy (1983). In another memorable film, he portrayed six uncles and the chauffeur in the 1965 comedy The Family Jewels. He directed several of his films and is well known as the host of annual Labor Day telethons for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Dean Martin transformed himself into a serious actor beginning with the film The Young Lions, where he appeared alongside Marlon Brando and Montgomery Clift. Other notable films include Bells are Ringing (1960), Ocean\'s 11 (1960), and Who Was That Lady (1960). He was nominated for five Golden Globes during his career, four of them for The Dean Martin Show, which aired from 1965 to 1974. He followed up that hosting job with another on The Dean Martin Celebrity Roast, which ran for eleven years until 1985. His screen career continued to flourish well past Lewis\'s heyday on the screen, but he became even more famous as a singer. His popular singles include “That\'s Amore”,  “Memories Are Made of This”, and “Everybody Loves Somebody”. He was often linked in films and Las Vegas nightclubs with the rest of the “Rat Pack”, which included Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis, Jr. Peeling to lower right corner tip, a tape-repaired tear and surface loss to top right edge and slight golding to dark areas of their faces, hands, and spyglass. Otherwise, fine condition.
