1930's High School Yearbookfeaturing students and teachers, activities andsports, candids, pictures of the school, and local advertisement, and including many pictures, mentions, and essays from the future United States President Richard M. Nixon. Great condition, with many wonderful photos and period design.
Richard Nixongraduated fromDuke University School of Lawand returned to California to practice law. He and his wifePat thenmoved to Washington in 1942 to work for thefederal government. He subsequently served onactive duty in the U.S. Navy Reserve during World War II. Hewas elected to theHouse of Representatives in 1946 and in the Senate in 1950.Nixon supported the Taft-Hartley Actof 1947, a federal law that limited the power of labor unions, and he maintained a friendship with vehement anit-communist Joe McCarthy.His pursuit of theHiss Caseestablished his reputation as an anti-communist and elevated him to national prominence. He was therunning mate of Dwight D. Eisenhower, the popular Republican Party presidential nominee in the1952. Nixon served for eight years as Vice President, becoming the second-youngest vice president in history at age 40. He waged an unsuccessfulpresidential campaign in 1960, losing toJohn F. Kennedy, and lost a race forgovernor of California to Pat Brown in 1962.In1968, he ran for the presidency again and was elected, defeating in the primaries Ronald Reagan, George Romney and Nelson Rockefeller, and in the general election defeating incumbent Vice PresidentHubert Humphrey. After five years of deliberation with Henry Kissinger and subsequent bombing campaigns, Nixonended American involvement in the war in Vietnamat the beginning of his second term in1973 and ended themilitary draft.His visit to Chinain 1972 eventually led todiplomatic relations between the two nationsand he initiateddetenteand theAnti-Ballistic Missile Treatywith the Soviet Union the same year. His administration generally transferred power from Washington D.C. to the states. He imposed wage and price controls for ninety days, enforceddesegregationof Southern schools, established theEnvironmental Protection Agencyand began the"War on Cancer."He also presided over theApollo 11 moon landing. In 1972 he was re-elected, defeated George McGovern.The Nixon administration militarily supporteda coup in Chilethat ousted popularly elected Salvadore Allendeand propelledright wing dictator Augusto Pinochet to power. By late 1973, theWatergate scandalcost Nixon his political support. On August 9, 1974, he resigned in the face of almost certainimpeachmentand removal from office—the only time a U.S. president has done so.
