Antique Large Hollow Cut Silhouette Portraits of Belgian Nobility. Early 20th century.
Found at a local estate last year. They are truly wonderful, and I was suprised no one had bought them. They make a great grouping. Simple gold leaf frames. The size of each is impressive, portraits being a little larger than life size.No known provenance unfortunately, a total mystery of who and why they were found together and similarly framed. The silhouette artist is unknown, but he/she did them all. Language is French.They are "hollow cut", i.e. the image is cut from the white paper, and then mounted on a backing of contrasting color.
The background color is not the same in each. The man has a purplish brown tone. The woman and boy are more alike in tone. Not sure if this is from fading or just natural.I realized the language was French and was able to decipher the names.They are the names of three important and noteworthy Belgians of aristocratic noble lineage from the early 20th century. As far as I know from research, they are not related.Elie d'Ursel (boy) dated "Juin 1919"Magd (Magda?) de Borchgrave d'Altena (woman) dated "30 Aout 1922" Charles de Liedekerke (man) dated "1911". I believe the man and boy are by the same artist because of the similarity in writing (the number 9). And I think the woman is by the same hand.These silhouettes are life size or a little larger.Lineage:1) Magd de Borchgrave d'Altena: "The name of a noble family from 's-Hertogenbosch and the County of Flanders." 2) ELie d'Ursel - born in Paris in 1915 : "d' Ursel is the name of an important
old Belgian noble family of German origin. The chief of the House is styled the Duke of Ursel, others are Count d'Ursel." 3) Charles de Liedekerke : I believe he is "Pierre Charles de Liedekerke,
born in 1869- d.1943. Son of Edouard de Liedekerke Comte de Liedekerke de
Pailhe and Hélène de Ferrière le Vayer. Husband of Marie Thérèse Comtesse
d'Hemricourt de Grünne. Father of Edouard Comte de Liedekerke and Gérard,
comte de Liedekerke. Brother of Jacques Benoit Théophile Comte de Liedekerke
de Pailhe; Régine Freiin von und zu Mentzingen; Jeanne, Comtesse de
Liedekerke and Geneviève, Comtesse de Liedekerke". Dimensions: 20 1/2" x 28" (Frame)
