Dan Namingha (1950- ) is a Native American painter and sculptor. He is a member of the Hopi-Tewa of the Hopi Tribe. Naminghaattended the University of Kansas (Lawrence, Kansas), the Institute of American Indian Arts (Santa Fe, New Mexico) and the Art Institute of Chicago (Chicago, Illinois). Namingha's complex heritage and spiritual beliefs inspire him to paint images of his homeland and the Hopi people. He incorporates color and Hopi Pueblo symbolism into his works in a contemporary, minimalist manner. Circles, squares, dark semi-circles and bold lines represent the sun, moon, horizon, corn and night, whilethe four colors of corn are associated with the four cardinal directions, the seasons and the cycle of life. Black symbolizes "above", or the upper world, and all other colors represent "below", or the lower world. Namingha also works in mixed media, as seen in some of his work, where he combines textured and colored paper and paint.
Namingha has been showing professionally for 40 years. His works are in the British Royal Collection (London, United Kingdom), Fogg Art Museum (Harvard), Heard Museum (Phoenix, Arizona), New MexicoMuseum of Art (Santa Fe, New Mexico), the Smithsonian Institution, the Sundance Institute (Sundance, Utah) and the Wheelwright Museum (Santa Fe, New Mexico).
