Saqqara Egypt Step Pyramid excavation tourists 1929 - Original Photo:
$35.00

An original (not modern reprint) 3.5x2.5" antique photo from a collection of Egyptian travel photos from 1929. Likely a one of a kind image.

Photo Overview

Tourists walk among freshly uncovered stone blocks and architectural fragments at the Saqqara excavation east of the Step Pyramid of Djoser in Egypt in 1929, with the massive stepped limestone structure and its retaining wall rising dramatically on the left and desert ruins stretching into the distance on the right.

Excavations around the Step Pyramid at Saqqara in the late 1920s were part of a major archaeological campaign that helped reveal the evolution of pyramid building from mastaba tombs to true pyramids and clarified the layout of Djoser’s 27th century BC funerary complex. Original amateur photographs from this period of work, especially showing tourists moving through active trenches and spoil, are far scarcer than later commercial images and provide a unique record of the site before heavy restoration – making this a compelling one-off piece of Egyptology history to add to your collection today.

Print analysis:
Small format glossy/fiber print on period photographic paper with handwritten notations on the reverse and no later copyright, press or reproduction stamps. Tonal range, edge wear and the contemporary 1929 caption strongly indicate a privately made travel snapshot printed at or very near the time of exposure rather than a later copy. This is best classified as a Type 1 original photograph, printed c1929.

Condition: Print is in good to excellent condition. Please see photos for details.
