Papyrus, commonly known as Cyperus papyrus (family Cyperaceae), has a rich history as one of the earliest known materials used for writing. Originating from the Nile delta in Egypt, the cultivation of papyrus plants dates back to ancient times. The plant’s stalk is harvested for its inner pith, which is divided into tiny strips, compressed together, and dried to create a smooth, thin writing surface. Papyrus is a grass-like aquatic plant that can grow up to 4.6 meters (15 feet) tall in still water up to 90 cm (3 feet) deep, with woody, bluntly triangular stems.
In ancient Egypt, papyrus was an essential part of daily life, used for making not only paper but also boats, mats, baskets, and even sandals. It played a crucial role in the administration, culture, and religion of ancient Egypt. The creation of papyrus paper involved peeling away the outer fibers, cutting the pith into thin strips, soaking them to remove sugars, pressing and drying them under heavy weights, and finally polishing the sheets to a smooth finish. Many ancient documents have survived due to Egypt's dry climate, offering insights into historical, administrative, and religious aspects of ancient Egyptian civilization.
Papyrus was also intertwined with Egyptian mythology and rituals. The plant's significance extended to various ceremonies and daily life, making it a symbol of both practicality and sacredness in ancient Egyptian culture.
