Aleksander Kulkoff / Alexander Kulkov - Arabian Market , 1930 , Russian:
Aleksander Kulkoff was born in Moscow in the family of bank official.
In 1914 he graduated the School of Painting, Carving and Architecture with a diploma of I rank artist.
In 1918 after finishing his military service in Finland he came to live in Estonia. He travelled a lot in the Mediterrananean
countries in Italy, Spain, France and also in Africa. In 1944 he emigrated from Estonia.
Kulkoff was one of the most distinguished Russian painters in Estonia. He has painted a series of portraits of public figures as well as artists. But he has also made theatrical painting on religious subjects. He was many-sided both, in technique and in genres. Especially remarkable are pictures of his impressions on his exotic journeys, e.g.to Africa. In 1930 he exposed these pictures at an exhibition in Tallinn, in the gallery Rataskaevu St.9, where also the Arabian mrket could have been shown. The painting is fairly realistic but also exotic. On foreground, the different people with lively mimics and gestures of the oriental market are very fascinating.Material: tempera, paper
