Apparently, guarding the dead was considered a perfectly reasonable career choice when your coworkers included gods with falcon heads and questionable family relationships. Anubis takes his responsibilities seriously, judging by an expression that suggests absolutely nobody is getting past him without the proper paperwork. Unlike ordinary dogs, he has little interest in chasing tennis balls or begging for table scraps. His preferred activities involve supervising mummification, protecting tombs, and ensuring the deceased arrive at their appointments on time. One suspects the consequences of showing up late could be rather unpleasant. Fortunately, this particular guardian requires neither elaborate burial offerings nor a freshly constructed pyramid. A respectable position among your treasures should keep him satisfied, although he may quietly judge your organizational skills.
Within the sacred traditions of ancient Egypt, Anubis served as protector of burial grounds and guide to souls traveling into the afterlife. Often portrayed as a black jackal or jackal-headed man, he became closely associated with embalming and the preservation of the deceased. His presence was believed to safeguard the dead against corruption and the dangers awaiting them beyond the mortal world. During the judgment of souls, Anubis oversaw the weighing of the heart against the feather of Ma\'at, representing truth and cosmic order. Those whose hearts balanced with the feather could continue toward a blessed existence, while others faced a far less welcoming fate. His image adorned tombs, funerary objects, and sacred monuments throughout centuries of Egyptian history. Today, his enduring legend represents protection, transformation, and the mysterious boundary between life and eternity.
