EARLY 19TH CENTURY MOTIF & VERSE SAMPLER BY ESTHER WILLIAMS - January 16th 1835:

Early 19th centurylinen and silk work sampler by Esther Williams - 1835. This sampler is just stunning with fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with a small central floral motif which has a heart, floral spray, and two flowers to either side and a butterfly and star above. There is a flower above the star which has fruit baskets, birds, diamonds and floral motifs to its left and right. The middle section of the linen is stitched with a central plaque containing the following verseIn thee I put my steadfast trustIncline thy ear and save my (soul)Be thou my strong aoffering placeIs thy decree which keeps me safeFrom cruel and ungodly menFor my earliest youth till now thy constant care
There is a small central heart beneath the verse which has a tiny dog, fruit basket and flower basket to each side. The lower section of the linen is stitched with a central fruit tree which has a tree, diamond and flower to each side and a narrow plaque beneath containing Esther\'s name and the date of January 16th 1835. The plaque has a central tree beneath which has a dog, bird, floral motif and floral urn to its left and right with two diamonds and a heart above the flowers and birds and a diamond and heart below them. The whole piece is then surrounded by a deep floral border.The linenoverall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly darker in places with several areas of damage, some larger than others. One is able to see through these that the sampler is sitting on a backing cloth. The damage is not as noticeable as it appears on the photographs. The sampleris behind glass soI\'m not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the silks appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. There is also the odd stitch missing here and there due to the damage. The sampler is contained within its seemingly original good quality hand painted rosewood effect frame which is in good condition with scratches and scuff marks commensurate with its age. There is also a sliver of old veneer loss on the inner top left edge.Measures 12 1/2\" x 15 1/2\"(sight size) and 17 1/4\" x 20 1/4\"including the frame.
